Dry Eye Is More Than Occasional Irritation

Dry eye disease occurs when your eyes do not produce enough healthy tears or when tears evaporate too quickly. Because tears play an important role in protecting and nourishing the eye's surface, changes in tear quality can affect comfort and vision.

Symptoms of Dry Eye

Common symptoms may include:

  • Burning or stinging eyes
  • Excessive tearing
  • Redness
  • Eye fatigue
  • Blurry or fluctuating vision
  • Gritty or sandy sensations
  • Light sensitivity
  • Contact lens discomfort

While symptoms may come and go, dry eye often becomes more noticeable over time without appropriate treatment.

Why Your Eyes May Feel Uncomfortable

Successful treatment begins with identifying why symptoms are occurring. Factors that may contribute to dry eye include:

  • Meibomian gland dysfunction
  • Ocular surface disease
  • Inflammation
  • Aging
  • Hormonal changes
  • Environmental conditions
  • Extended screen use
  • Contact lens wear
  • Certain medications

Because every patient is different, treatment should be tailored to the underlying cause rather than focusing solely on symptoms.

The Oil Glands Along Your Eyelids Play an Important Role

Healthy tears contain an oil layer that helps prevent moisture from evaporating too quickly.

These oils are produced by tiny glands along the eyelid margins called meibomian glands. When those glands become blocked or stop functioning properly, tears may evaporate more rapidly, leading to irritation, fluctuating vision, and discomfort.

This condition, known as meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), is one of the most common causes of dry eye disease. Identifying and treating MGD often plays an important role in improving long-term comfort.
